Daily Report - Day 3
It is the third match day of the tournament. Hong Kong suffered their first loss in the tournament. Meanwhile, Philippines, the reigning champion, secured an easy victory against Singapore.
Game 1: Thailand 9-4 Hong Kong
Hong Kong (2-0) faced Thailand(1-1) in their third game and they continued its squad rotation. Chiu Chi Kam Kenneth, who played in German league, made his debut in the tournament. The host had a steady start, building a 3-0 advantage with their first home run in the tournament. Thailand made their way back quickly at the bottom 4th inning to equal the score. They took the lead at the 6th inning, including a three-run homer. Hong Kong lost 4-9, suffering their first defeat in the tournament.
Hong Kong deployed four pitchers during the game. Pat Ahearne, coach of Hong Kong explained, “We had Kenneth starting for us, he pitched well and stayed with the plan and kept us in the game for most of it until the 6th inning.” “They faced a pretty tough challenge, that’s just the nature of baseball. Sometimes you make your pitch and have success, sometimes you make your pitch and don’t have success.”
Hong Kong will have one day-off and face the reigning champion Philippines on Thursday. Pat said since the team had good plan and line-up, it was not necessary to make any adjustment.
Game 2: Singapore 1-12 The Philippines
Philippines(1-0) enjoyed a perfect start by producing a four-run 1st inning. The young Singaporeans had several defensive errors, allowing Philippines to extend their lead. They scored the first and the only run of the game at 7th inning. Philippines won their second game in a row with a 12-1 victory against Singapore.
Philippines captain Adriane Ros Bernardo said all games are important for them. “We just want to make sure we tell our opponents we are ready. We will win when we have to, and we will give them a good fight.””I think our team has depth. Everyone can hit and our pitchers can also deliver. Our defense are really solid.”
