Daily Report - Day 5
In the final day of the tournament, Indonesia got their first win after defeating Singapore; Hong Kong could not stop Philippines from winning back to back titles.
Game 1: Indonesia 11-1 Singapore
Both teams were looking for their first win. After a huge defeat against Thailand yesterday (0-17), Singapore adjusted their defense and did quite well at first two innings. However, Singapore made some turnovers at 3rd, allowing Indonesia to make a five-run. Singapore made their first run at 6th, but couldn’t make anymore later on. Indonesia won 11-1, their first win of the tournament.
Indonesia coach Gilberto Riesanto Sajogo was happy with their first win today. “Unfortunately for the first three games we didn’t win. This is the tryout for the Asian Games in Indonesia, hopefully we can fight back in Indonesia.” The coach hoped they can take revenge on Philippines in the upcoming Asian Games.
Game 2: Hong Kong 5-7 Philippines
Hong Kong faced the reigning champion Philippines in the last game of the tournament. Both teams had a fantastic start on both ends. Though Philippines made the first run, Hong Kong quickly equaled the score with Wu Tsz Tung stole the base. Philippines strengthened their offense and made a four-run 2nd inning. At 8th, Hong Kong pitcher Li Wing Sing hit a 3-run home run to reduce the deficit down to two. Philippines pitcher Romeo JR Jasmin did not allow HK to make a comeback at 9th, securing a 7-5 win and Philippines became the champion for the second time.
Au Hok Leung, coach of Hong Kong said there is only one thing they can do at the end of the match, “We need to score point by point, shouldn’t be thinking about how to get several runs at one inning. When we were trailing 5-7, it was a close game, and I think our players improved a lot.” Au also said two experienced players in their team, pitcher Leung Yu Chong, and Catcher Tsang Kin Chung helped a lot. Li Wing Sing, who won the award with the most home runs and with the most runs batted in, also improved a lot during this tournament.
Finishing as 2nd runner-up in this tournament, Hong Kong will be preparing for the Asian Game in August.
